「The Love of SMB」
Art Exhibition, Taitung Art and Culture Center, Taitung, Taiwan

These two paintings were created during an art residency in Taitung, southeastern Taiwan, exploring the historical and cultural significance of the Society of the Divine Word (SMB) and its impact on the local community. The project seeks to preserve the legacy of Catholicism in the region and honor the dedication of foreign priests who served there.

Taking Root (U) reflects the story of Hsiaoma and the St. Nicolaus Church of SMB. The painting draws on the breathtaking Taitung coastline and its vibrant colors—greens, blues, and whites—which are translated into three distinct sections of the composition. It commemorates nine Swiss priests who journeyed to Taiwan in their youth, capturing the serenity and enduring spirit of the land and its people. Straw from the graveyard and recycled paper pulp were incorporated to symbolize renewal and connection to the past, while nine delicately depicted butterflies represent the priests’ lasting bond with the land.

Nonstop Gently Shining in the Dark (D) is inspired by Mary, mother of Jesus, symbolizing protection and grace during dark times. The work integrates architectural elements of the Taitung ChuLu St. Mary Magdalena Catholic Church with indigenous Beinan cultural motifs, such as slate. The painting conveys the hardships faced by the local community and the warmth offered by the priests. The final composition celebrates the community’s improved life and expresses gratitude, with a wreath around God symbolizing appreciation and connection.
